Dear Friend:
The Friends of W. Kerr Scott Lake (FOL) is a non-profit organization with a mission'to protect, preserve, beautify and improve the natural resources of W. Kerr Scott Reservoir and the adjacent Yadkin River Basin by individual service and promoting community education and public awareness'.
For the past 2 years, we have operated the Bandit's Roost Campground on the lake under lease from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The camping fees were thereby returned to us in Wilkes County rather than being retained in the U. S. Treasury as is the case with the fees of the other campgrounds on the lake. These fees, amounting to over $180,000 in 2009 and $210,000 in 2010, were used to construct a badly needed bathhouse at Berry Mountain Park, improve and expand the trails around the lake (in conjunction with the Brushy Mountain Cycle Club, BMCC), help complete the Environmental Education Center (EEC) and its attendant hillside native flora/fauna trail, pay gate attendants and the FOL Executive Director as well as being used on numerous other small projects around the reservoir. In other words, these funds were put to use in our community at a time we really needed them.
However, the USACE Headquarters in Washington, D. C. has cancelled the lease because they determined it was illegal. This action derives us of a much needed funding source since grants are currently scarce, but our needs continue to grow. The 'Water Resources Development Act of 1992' needs a minor change in wording that would permit entities such as FOL to operated USACE facilities under lease. This wording change has been provided to Congresswoman Virginia Foxx, but you can imagine the priority that would be given to our request in light of all our countries problems.
You can help us by voicing your support of our activities to Congresswoman Foxx and Senators Burr and Hagan and requesting their help in restoring our lease. We have made it easy to contact all three. If you will go to our face book site .However, please feel free to write your own letter if you are so inclined.
Thanks you for your support in this important matter,
Michael Kennedy, President Friends of W. Kerr Scott Lake
