Our mission is simple, and it’s reflected in our tagline—Protecting, preserving and beautifying the lake as a treasured resource. The Friends of the W. Kerr Scott Lake, Inc., may be a new non-profit 501 C 3 organization located in Wilkesboro, but we’re already on our way of completing projects on the lake and generating tourism to the community as well.
More than a 100 individuals, representing all segments/leaders of the community and indeed the state, have joined this organization that is dedicated to protecting, preserving and beautifying the W. Kerr Scott Lake and Reservoir. In this work, Friends has established a legal agreement with the Army Corps of Engineers, who oversee the operation of the reservoir, monitor the environment and maintain and run the extensive camping facilities and federal land.
The legal agreement allows Friends to work collaboratively with the Army Corps to preserve and enhance the W. Kerr Scott Lake and surrounding land and to create opportunities for the community and region to enjoy educational, theater, concerts, sporting and cultural events at the Lake. This focus is expressed in the Friends’ mission statement: “To protect, preserve, beautify, and improve the Natural Resources and facilities of W. Kerr Scott Reservoir and the adjacent Yadkin River Basin by individual service, and promoting community education and public awareness.”
