The Friends of W. Kerr Scott Lake is a 501 C 3 non-profit organization. Individuals, representing all segments of the community and indeed the state, have joined this organization that is dedicated to protecting, preserving and beautifying the W. Kerr Scott Lake. In this work, Friends has established a legal agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers of W. Kerr Scott Reservoir to allow Friends to work collaboratively with the Army Corps to preserve and enhance the W. Kerr Scott Lake and surrounding land and to create opportunities for the community and region to enjoy theater, concerts, sporting and cultural events at the lake.
The Friends of the W. Kerr Scott Lake, Inc., hold the following as their mission statement:
“To protect, preserve, beautify, and improve the Natural Resources and facilities of
W. Kerr Scott Reservoir and the adjacent Yadkin River Basin by individual service,
and by promoting community education and public awareness.”
Through grants and fundraising efforts, the Friends have been
instrumental in bringing the following projects to fruition in the past
5 years:
• The Fort Hamby Amphitheater/Forest Edge Community Theater
• The Environmental Education Center (EEC) at the W. Kerr Scott
Visitors Center
• The handicapped accessible waterfowl impoundment at Marley Ford
• The new restroom/bathhouse facilities at Berry Mountain Beach
• Two fully stocked bookstores at the W. Kerr Scott Visitors Center
Our long range goals and plans now include:
• The continual maintenance support of the above projects as needed
• The expansion and upgrading of the EEC and nature trails at the
W. Kerr Scott Visitors Center
• The continued development and maintenance of the hiking and
bike trails around the lake
• Continuing the upgrading and improvement of facilities at the
various public access areas around the lake.
We are the Bandit's Roost Campground Leasee for the Campground. We have achieved this goal to bring funds to improve our W. Kerr Scott Bandit's Roost Park. We are the second non-profit in the United States to accomplish this with partnering with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. We are still making history!
